How about changing your Internet provider, Nick?
I'm sure you could save a few pennies by moving to a better ISP...
TV Fourm isn't working for me...

One is tempted to wonder if anyone actually cares while Mental Charlie and the children rule the roost.martindtanderson wrote:Well all seems to be right again.

If you look at the stats for TV Forum over the last 12 months, things aren't looking good. It's ratings have dropped dramatically.

Probably because of that "the server is busy, piss off and come back later" message.Jamez wrote:Nick Harvey wrote:One is tempted to wonder if anyone actually cares while Mental Charlie and the children rule the roost.martindtanderson wrote:Well all seems to be right again.

What causes that, anyway? And why has it still not been fixed given that it has being going on for a long time and can potentially turn away site visitors?
I don't seem to remember this problem happening before the big crash, so what gives?

The thing that always mystifies me is why I never get that stupid message on any other website.Chris wrote:Probably because of that "the server is busy, piss off and come back later" message.
Does anyone else ever get it anywhere else?
Because I only get it on TVF, I can only assume it's because the forum code's been phuqued about with to such a huge extent by the sadministrator.
Why can't he just leave things alone and stop messing about with them? The worst periods of downtime are always just after he's made another of his "stupendous" amendments, which wasn't needed in the first place.
Perhaps if all the code was reverted to basics, the whole place would run a lot smoother?
I believe that it's to do with database connections. Long story short, TVF can only have x number of people viewing it at once (well, x number of queries), and there isn't a virtual equivilent of "overflow parking" or whatever.Nick Harvey wrote:Because I only get it on TVF, I can only assume it's because the forum code's been phuqued about with to such a huge extent by the sadministrator.
I think it's incorrect to blame Asa- it depends on the server he rents space on- although coding something that will use more queries (like the latest threads "ticker" that last a couple of days) don't really help.
Also, and somewhat more controversially... should you really complain about a website that Asa has setup and runs out of his own goodwill, at no expense to you? I think it's a case of "if you don't like it, find somewhere else".
The thing about TVF, is that it's too bulky, and large parts of it are unnecessary.
Mocks Forum: What's the point? 99% of the mocks posted are utter crap. Scrap this forum and save vital bandwidth.
Requests Forum: People seem hell-bent in not helping anyone else out. Overwhelming and childish air of superiority by proclaiming that they have the item requested, but won't or can't post it for various licencing reasons. Close this forum, too. It's pointless and makes the whole site look naff.
The homepage. Far too bulky and slow. The flash is pointless, the gimmicky drop down menu's etc all contribute to increased bandwidth usuage and in fact, make it more difficult to navigate the site. It should be sorted.
I think the only way for TVF to get out of the rut it seems to have fallen into, is to look very carefully at some of the points I've suggested above, and scale down it's operations. Also, the moderation should be far more strict when it comes to trolls, people who are obviously pre-pubic and have a hopeless grasp of communications and trouble-makers.
To be honest, I don't think Asa particularly cares about the site anymore. We've given him lots of advice and constructive critisism, but he never takes any of it on-board.
I think the end is probably not too far away for TVF, unless some radical changes occur.

I don't understand that paragraph.Psythor wrote:I think it's incorrect to blame Asa- it depends on the server he rents space on- although coding something that will use more queries (like the latest threads "ticker" that last a couple of days) don't really help.
The first seven words are completely contradicted by the remainder of it.
HE rents the server, so it's HIS choice of server, so it's HIS fault.
HE does the coding, so HE uses more queries, so it's HIS fault.
So how can you say it's incorrect to blame HIM?
That sentence proves you to be about a month out of date with your information.Psythor wrote:I think it's a case of "if you don't like it, find somewhere else".
