My guess would be they use radioactive isotopes.
Smoking ban introduced in NI
I believe the usual source used for irradiating fruit and veg is Cobalt 60. The process doesn't contaminate the produce, but it does mean that it has a longer shelf life, hence my scepticism at the reference to "fresh fruit and veg".
I dont have an issue with smokers, just as I dont have an Issue with people who drink loads - I have an issue when it affects (or should that be effects) me persionaly. I hate being somewhere where others smoke, it causes my bf to have bad asthma attacks.
What people do to themselves is thier probelm, I dont want to dictate to people, just leave me out of it!

I think that part of the problem of living in a democracy is that people have the right to do what they want, within reason. Fortunately, I don't suffer with asthma, but I really don't like breathing in traffic fumes, and as a cyclist, I probably draw it deeper into my lungs than a pedestrian would.
Do I think people have the right to prematurely kill themselves? Of course they have. Do I like breathing in other people's traffic fumes? No, but unfortunately that's the price of democracy.

The argument that it affects other people is, obviously, the reason why this ban is being considred. If it didn't affect others, then there wouldn't be a problem. I don't feel it's fair to be smoked in front of, smoking should be done respectfully. Fortunately, most smokers are indeed considerate of those who choose not to, but there are also many who appear not to care less about how others feel and that's why I support this proposed ban.
smoking areas and places that expect vheavy smoking and therefore install good enough ventilation systems to cope with it.marksi wrote:Great example Dave. Waiting to see how the smokers work their rights argument around that...

Asthma is the main reason i'm quitting the ciggies.
I wasn't asthmatic when i started smoking. Me smoking brought it on. It is not severe at the moment but know in time it will get worse.
I have had several failed attempts at quitting but this time i'm determined to quit. I'm fed up of waking up in the morning and coughing my guts up and wheezing when i walk a short distance.
I chew gum like a cow chewing the cud because my breath stinks of coffee and fags
Sadly my blokes daughter smokes and has been for a few years now. She's only 15. She is my Saturday girl and will be training to be a hairdresser with me. I'm trying to encourage her to quit. Ultimately the choice is hers. She won't want to smoke at work because that means going outside (i'll never quit if i allow staff and clients to smoke in the salon). So i'll share my patches etc with her. Hopefully she'll quit now before it gets too hard for her to.
Talking of hair.. What is going on with yours Pete? I thought you had got yourself a haircut. Judging by your avatar i have to ask " which hair did they cut?". You really must get yourself to Kent and allow me to butcher it properly for you.
Back on the smoking issue..
I just don't want to be a woman with yellow fingers, yellow/grey hair, deep wrinkles, rasping voice and with an oxygen tank not far behind. I'll probably die young which is not good for someone who loves life.
I'm really looking forward to my quit day, i just hope i don't turn the type of person i hate.. The dreaded reformed smoker.

Mental anxiety, Mental breakdowns, Menstrual cramps, Menopause... Did you ever notice how all our problems begin with Men?
Oh if only that were true. The truth involves a game that governments continually play. It's called "use the right hand to whip them up into a frenzy about an issue that doesn't really matter, then they wont see what the other hand's doing". As smoking in public has decreased, asthma has increased, traffic on the other hand has increased. Go figure.cdd wrote:The argument that it affects other people is, obviously, the reason why this ban is being considred.
