Yes, in its early days it did use to be quite flakey and only simple Windoze applications would work. But it has come a long way in the past 5 years such that now even Internet Explorer works reliably with Wine.

Have a look at the reliability list at

<http://appdb.winehq.ORG/>

and many people are also having great success at getting numerous Windoze games to work with WINE.

Of course there are now lots of native versions of games available for GNU/Linux as well.

On the subject of IT.

When i log onto aol, my firewall asks whether i want to grant or block access to the programme; Symantec email proxy.

I select the block option because i haven't a clue what it is.

What is it? and should i be granting it access to the internet?

Let it access the internet, but if it wants to act as a server, I recommend to say No. I did and it works fine.

What firewall have you got?

Sounds like you're using a Symantec virus scanner? If so then this is the dongle that your e-mails pass through to scan them for virii.

can't you not use the access permissions on the ntfs file system to restrict what users see which files and which icons in the start menu?

Perhaps the products of this company may be of interest to those wishing to hide and keep secure data and programs, for which a free version is available for download?
