Apparently so.
I'm just setting up the Tiscali broadband connection for the parents at their house, and it keeps redirecting me to Google Netherlands whenever I want Google.com, BBC News thinks I'm outside the UK, etc.
I'm assuming Tiscali are Dutch, but erm... isn't this a little bit odd? Presumably they are using the UK exchange network, and their servers are based in this country?
Or have I been a fool to go with this company?
Everything else works fine, by the way. And yes, I know I can just click 'go to Google.com' at the bottom of the page, but I don't particularly want to every time.
I've moved to the Netherlands
They're in the UK but as they are European-wide they probably are using IP blocks that used to be used or registered to their operations the Netherlands, hence the redirection to google.nl and blocking from the BBC. They might also have a shared IP pool across their European countries.
I don't think there is much you can actually do, apart from disconnect/reconnect until you get an IP that is part of the "UK" pool. Or you could call network operations/customer services and inform them of the problem.

A little, yes. They just whacked on a 30gig/mo cap like the ntl I assume you just left. Couple with that some very bad speed reports and I'd say *could do better*. Although having said that I'm on Tiscali dial-up as I write thiscat wrote:Or have I been a fool to go with this company?

Still, at least you'll be young forever!
Knight knight
Well I just hope they have got themselves sorted out. I was with them a few months ago on the 512k service - it was actually SLOWER than dialup most of the time. I contacted them to tell them I wasnt getting a full broadband service, but they kept saying I had signed up to a 12 month contract so was stuck with them. I wrote a letter to them demanding that the line was released and I cancelled the direct debits. I told them they had broken the contract themselves by not providing the service they are supposed to. The line was soon released and no more payments were taken.cat wrote: Or have I been a fool to go with this company?
Have a look around the net - there are a shit load of people having problems with this company.
Tiscali is the name of a Nuragic village in Sardinia.
<http://www.sardiniapoint.IT/6041.html>
The ISP, named after this village, was founded by a Sardinian, Renato Soru, in Caligari, Sardinia in January 1998.
Their predatory technique is to first gain a foothold in a country by buying a small established ISP. Then once revenues are flowing, they then become a major player by buying up the remaining independent competitors.

Presumably you are being redirected to google.NL because you are going through a proxy gateway server of tiscali which is geographically allocated to or even located in the Netherlands.

There have been recent rumors that Wanadoo (FR) is seeking to buy Tiscali.Tiscali UK was launched in July 2001 following the acquisitions of Liberty Surf, World Online and LineOne. Most recently, Tiscali UK acquired Tiny Online and Gateway ISP. Tiscali UK is positioned within the UK market as the 4th largest ISP.

No, I'm on NTL at Uni, i'm just doing this for the parent's house.Sput wrote:A little, yes. They just whacked on a 30gig/mo cap like the ntl I assume you just left. Has worked fine other than this so far, only I've bought the wrong router (no problem, as I needed one for NTL anyway and that should work fine with that load of cunts) and I did Windows Update on their new laptop and it appears to have slaughtered the display driver, turning my screen into a jigsaw puzzle like thing and crashing it... ho hum! But i've restarted about eight times and it SEEMS (ugh...tempting fate) to be OK.
