Chocolate milk is always a winner for hangovers. Lilt comes a close second for me.

As an ex-alcoholic (been teetotal for 10 months now), back then I would swear by "hair of the dog" as you can imagine. Any excuse, basically, to start where I'd left off the night before.

The idea of drinking two pints of water never seemed to work, and quite often made me puke straight afterwards.

Are you totally serious, Skytower?

If you have overcome it, good on you, matie. Fantastic performance. Would you mind sharing your story?

Echo that. Well done.

My cure this morning was to get up at 04:45, walk to work and monitor the Today programme live from 06:30 until 09:00.

I love you James Naughtie.

Yup, totally serious - and thanks for the kind remarks.

Without going into too much detail, and derailing the thread, i was a heavy whisky drinker, although, to be honest, anything else I could lay my hands on - if it was alcohol - was consumed.

It was a situation that, for no real reason, got totally out of hand (the nature of my work, and other circumstances at the time didn't help), and it reached a point last October where I went from somewhere in the region of a bottle of whisky a day, to nothing. I put a block on anything alcoholic, didn't receive much in the way of assistance from friends and colleagues (many of whom were still offering me drink and mocking my "going teetotal"), but, ten months on, I'm glad to say that hangovers aren't something I need to worry about any more.

There's a strange irony about watching drunk people these days...

I bet there is a strange irony.

To drop that type of addiction so quickly and decisively is awe-inspiring, Skytower. Without wishing to sound patronising, you should be proud of yourself, matie.

In the 10 months since you made that decision, how do you feel now about it?

Ten months on, the addiction, or routine, is obviously long-gone. I don't miss drinking, to be honest - I get the occasional thought of "what would it be like to have a beer", but I know I'm well past buckling, and know that I wouldn't ever want to go back to what was. The other plus is that other people accept it now, so people know to get me coke, or Red Bull, or water, or whatever (how crap IS the selection of soft drinks, particularly in clubs?!).

I'll also add that two and a half months after quitting the drink, I did exactly the same thing with cigarettes, and went from 25-a-day to none. I refused to give up on New Year's Day, so made it the 2nd of January instead. So, anyone who wants any tips on willpower, or suchlike... you only have to ask!

Thanks again for the kind remarks.
