I have a theory when things go wrong on my 'pootah. If in doubt use system restore, it never fails for me. If you don't know by now that i'm useless with compootahs, then where the hell have you been?
I have called Aol and microsot often enough ( bless them) and know their instructions by heart.
Computer Problem - help, please
Well today the "graphics controller" on the Windows PC has gone. What started out as a random restart because it was causing the system to reset has now made the screen go wonky and made XP unusable. Even after a format. Brilliant.

My computer came with Windows ME, it was the most awful operating system to work it, I am so glad I am on Windows XP Professional, I learnt the lessons of the past of backing up data and running Antivirus and Spyware/Adaware software and of course using Firefox helps as well, since I have been doing this, my computer has worked like a charm, now I just need another graphics card, then I might get back to designing TV mocks!!!!!!!!
Try this..........
Open Windows in blind user mode (SAFE MODE - press F8 when it's booting - and keep pressing until you get the options)
Log on as normal.
Press START then RUN. Type MSCONFIG and press enter.
Under BOOT.INI check if there are any programs you don't recognise.
If so, uncheck them.
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp and download the BETA trial of AntiSpyware. It says on the web it's a BETA version, but it's actually not.
Install this, and run it.
Delete any entries found.
Restart PC in normal mode.
If it freezes again, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and go to PROCESSES. Find explorer.exe (it'll prob have a huge memory dump)
End the task and then goto FILE > NEW TASK... > and type explorer.exe

There is a system restore BETA available next month (about the 15th) for Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional. Your automatic updates will find it.

I'm running Windows Vista BETA1 and it's not that bad! Not crashed - yet.

Windows ME has a known bug with the System Restore which means it usually falls over and refuses to work after September 8th, 2001. There's an update for it on Windows Update. I shan't bore you with why this is, suffice to say the update link for "more information" on the update itself explains it all.

Was there anything GOOD about ME?!

It didn't look like 2k though, ME used MS Sans Serif as its main font for a start, whilst 2000 used Tahoma.

You mean the default font, which anybody can change with a few clicks. Easily make ME look like Win2K, in fact a bit more digging about will transplant it completely cosmetically while still being ME.James Martin wrote:It didn't look like 2k though, ME used MS Sans Serif as its main font for a start, whilst 2000 used Tahoma.
