Although I have a mobile phone, I tend not to use it much - just to send the odd text message and make an emergency call. I prefer the good old landline to mobile phones for long voice calls, as the prices for voice calls are a rip-off unless you shell out loads of notes per month for a contract phone.

For example - a call in the evening to another landline for one hour - 5.5p (ok, 10.5p if you include the 5p connection charge).

The equivalent call from my mobile to another network - £24 (£0.40 x 60) :shock:

In fact, make that for all calls to and from mobiles. Calls to and from mobiles are a complete rip-off unless you pay for extra tariffs.

This is the only phone I've ever had, and the only network I've ever been on, so I'll vote O2.

Anyway. thanks fellas. However, major confusion here. I have been on The Link and searched for a D500, I got what I wanted, but there is a choice of Vodaphone, Orange, and 02, and they are all different prices but all the same (but the Orange one is silver)

Search "d500" on The Link.co.uk and select Pay and Go mobiles

Take a look, what do you think?

Hmmm... I was with T-Mobile for a while and I hate them. Too expensive, having to top up with Ten Pounds which when your like 13 with a handed down brick... cant really afford it.

then was with virgin for an age, and i was really pleased with their service tbh, quite cheap and what not, but their voices get on my tits!!! The changing between male and female vocals and the twatty ad you had to listen through before you could hear your balance! Argh!

Now with my newest phone on vodafone, after reluctantly changing to, i use the smartstep price plan (where you use 3 minutes and the price goes down etc) which is quite effective, free vodafone live GPRS. Cant complain, really. Oh, but browsing non vodafone GPRS is a .7p per half kbwich is a whole 3p more than virgin, bastards.

Well, by doing careful research, I think 02, due to the fact Vodaphone charge 30p for the first 3mins then about 5p for the rest, whereas O2 charge 25p for 3mins, then 5p for the rest of the day, but on weekends it's 2p.

Does anybody know how much O2 charge for texts though, because they seem to be confusing me on their website...

O2 generally have always charged 10p inc VAT for their texts on PAYG mobiles.

On their contract tariffs at the moment, they are giving away hundreds. On mine, I believe there are 500 a month! I doubt I'll ever use that much (I hate texting), but I'm sure it's 10p per text after that too.

Well I'm always the texting type. I never like phone calls, due to my stammer, that's why I'd never go on a contract again.

Mmm...that's a pretty good reason to want to use text over voice calls. I have a couple of customers with pronounced stammers (no idea how bad yours is), but you can genuinely sense their discomfort at using the phone.

I was once told that the most insulting thing you can do to a stammerer is complete his/her sentences when he/she is trying to get a word out. Hence, I never do it. Is that correct?

I think the cheapest O2 tariff is around £15 a month and it has 250 text messages. Why not try that?

T-mobile provide price plans which include inclusive text messages only (but I believe you can still make phone calls). It's designed for deaf/hard-of-hearing people, but I can't see why they'd stop anyone else from subscribing:

o2 pre-pay:
£10 per month for 300 free texts.
