Regarding printed ads - they don't use track you in the way the majority of on-line adverts do. However, whether you'd block them for that reason alone is down to personal paranoia!
Back on dial-up, I'd block most ads purely because of speed issues, but now with broadband it's less of a problem.
The ads I do hate and generally block are Flash animations with audio. A handy little tool FlashSwitch sits in the system tray ready to turn Flash on or off at a single click.

its extension system has enabled me to find a free plugin called 'AdBlock' which works amazingly well - better than Norton Internet Security. Here's some popular websites, descumed:
no bbc news ticker:

no full screen flash adverts making silly noises:

no google syndication text ads:

just ones i added in. i went on all the sites i visit regularly and added them that way.
Here's my adblock patterns string from the aboutconfig page:
http://adserver.adtech.de/* http://ads.adviva.net/* http://view.atdmt.com/* http://ad.uk.doubleclick.net/* http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/* http://*.falkag.net/* http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/javascript/vcl.js http://www.bbc.co.uk/syndication/html/jsserver/* http://*.tradedoubler.com/* http://*.adbureau.net/* http://*.imrworldwide.com/*

The rest is self explanatory . . .
In that case, just click Cancel when you see this dialog . . .cdd wrote: I downloaded a few adblock files off the itnernet but they seemed to "overblock", so to speak.
Thanks!

The new filters from the adblock.txt file you've downloaded will be added to your existing filters.
