Why do tennis players grunt?

Sitting here watching a bit of Wimbledon, and I can't help but be intrigued by the fact that the tennis players are making extremely loud grunting noises when hitting the ball.

I don't know if I'm feeling a little immature this evening, but I seem to burst out in fits of childish titters every now and then because of this. Must be the fact that I've only got just under a week left until the big 18.

so now they want to prevent it...even though its an automatic thing for players to do when swinging for the ball. Although, saying this, players have only started making noises in the past decade or so...

i don't know if it says it in the above eprt, but Maria Sharapova's (defending champion) grunt is the equivalent to that of a police siren.
