Not that I noticed it was on aside from the facts that here in York...

The roads were clean and washed down.
Litter bins emptied.
The collection of bottles that had built up by the never-emptied recycling bins mysteriously vanished overnight. Odd that, being on the way to the racecourse.
Hanging baskets at bus shelters. And with LIVE flowers in them!
All the statues in the city centre painted. Particulary ones of royalty.
All charity shops had hat displays in the windows instead of old Kajagoogoo records like normal.
The pubs were charging entry fees.
Rubbish collection was a good four hours earlier than normal.
Extra buses. And on time!

Funny how with some of these things the council makes the effort when 'er Maj' visits but not normally. Sigh! :roll:

Reminds me of my old school - when Ofstead inspectors were due, out came the pretty displays and the cleaners actually cleaned things - normally we had to sit in dusty rooms with pupil's work from about 20 years ago hanging on by a thread.

It's a shame after all the effort that went into sprucing up York city centre that greedy hotel owners charging extortionate prices forced thousands of racegoers to opt for hotels in Leeds or beyond. Sadly as a result York's restaurants and businesses didn't benefit in the way they should have done.

Having said that, 10 out of 10 for the city planners for avoiding the travel gridlock which was predicted.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'm only 15 - 20 miles down the road (Camblesforth, if you know it) and was in York on Saturday. How nice it was too. It scrubs up well, the ol' place.

I'm not even going to tell you what I've had to do for a visit from HRH tomorrow. As a matter of fact I'm not allowed to even confirm where Her Maj is, and it would be more than my job's worth.

Suffice to say that my clients are using phrases like "head on the block" to adequately communicate what will happen if things don't arrive on time.
