Can anyone tell me if there is a way to lock on the Fn key on a laptop, as hiiting "i" and coming up as 5 is pissing me off.

What model? On most, yeah, there is. If you're on a Toshiba laptop try Fn-11.

What you describe sounds like Num Lock is on. Just turn it off and it should stop happening.
