As for Index, no major loss there, it has always been behind Argos and seemed more old fashioned and more expensive. Plus it also annoys me that at Index (well the Warrington branch anyway) you have to walk through Littlewoods, which is like walking through the old biddies clothing at Marks & Spencers.

I'll miss Index actually. They do have some advantages over Argos (like there aren't so many products exempted from the 16 day moneyback guarantee), and they were a useful fallback if Argos were out of stock of something.

Aswell as that, they were the only meaningful competition to Argos - giving Argos back their monopoly isn't something I'm for at all.

Yes they were good for a backup to Argos, except the one in Ilford would be out of stock so long that you'd end up going back to Argos & it would be in stock again

You won't miss them that much, surely? If you used them only as a "fallback" to Argos or where Argos' returns policy didn't suit you, then it's not hard to see why they failed.

I won't. The one that was nearest to where I used to live was the only 'catalogue shop' in town, because Argos hadn't ventured that far north. I'm glad they eventually did though. Got bad memories of Index. I remember the shop to be very shoddy, with frayed and holey carpets all over the place, usually taped up badly with black and yellow warning tape. Was like that for years.

Also, when you went to Argos you could see the guys in the back coming down the stairs and putting your goods on a shelf. At Index, they had a big chute which would rumble loudly as your highly-expensive, just-paid-for electrical product tumbled down from the warehouse upstairs, getting nicely bashed to bits.
