Microsoft are planning to release a IE7 this summer.
Will it ever be as powerful as Firefox?

It's already more powerful IMO. Firefox isn't better or worse than IE, it's merely different. Also remember that many sites are not compatible with Firefox.

I just hope that they put in tabs. The second reason I switched (first was pop-ups).

What are these mythical sites that aren't compatible with Firefox? People are always claiming this as a mark against Firefox, but I've never found any.

i think 'incompatible' is perhaps the wrong word to use; a fair few sites don't render as they should in firefox - i've seen quite a few with tables which do not line up correctly. the last time i checked, http://www.sky.com/news has some alignment issues. they are mostly insignificant, however - i've never found a site which simply refuses to work in ff, although apparently, some ssl sites do require ie.

the thing that pisses me off with firefox is how having tabs open with a random combination of what must be specific sites or scripts makes ff eat tons of memory to the point where its easier to turn off the pc at the wall and start windows again. it hasn't happened to me for a while, but it's happened more than half a dozen times since the 1.0 build.

It may have the highest share of users, but that doesn't mean that it's not the quality product. I use Camino (a Mozilla browser for Mac) and the only noticable problem I've ever had is adding an ITV/BBC Region to my TV Forum profile. I find it much more efficient and simple than IE (or indeed any Windows browser I've ever used).

Does anyone know that the statistics for Browser usage on Macs are?

What garbage.

1) IE7, this upcoming beta, will only at this time be tooted for XP users using Service Pack 2. And considering how basically sod all has changed with it since November 1997, it doesn't really qualify as IE7.

2) Sites that are not compatible with Firefox are only not compatible on two counts:

a) usage of Microsoft technologies, including but not limited to, ActiveX technology and VBScript.

b) Contents of the User Agent field. Which, with the provision of a plug-in for Firefox, is easily overcome, therefore rendering probably less than 1% of all the sites as "not compatible" with Firefox.

To be fair Neil Internet Explorer has evolved quite a bit in its technological support.

November 1997 was Internet Explorer 4 and there's a lot of sites that don't work - or at least don't work properly - in IE4.
