Misbehaving XP System Tray

My System Tray in Windows XP SP2 is misbehaving.

Icons that are usually there sometimes appear at boot-up, sometimes not. My "Safely Remove Hardware" icon doesn't want to show itself at all.

This is a real pain as some applications I have running at boot-up can only be accessed through the System Tray. I have to use Task Manager to terminate the application or process then manually run it. It then appears in the System Tray as it should.

Any of you bright sparks out there had any experience of anything like this and can offer some suggestions?

I've tried different configurations for Auto-hide to no avail.

I have a similar, yet irritating problem to you.

I have set some icons in the tray to be hidden and some to be always shown. However, occasionally Windows decided to play 'musical tray icons' and hides the ones I have forced to show all the time.

Do you use Panicware Spamwasher Chris? I've discovered that Spamwasher seems to be implicated in my problem when it runs at boot-up. If I disable it from running automatically, all my Tray icons appear. I can then manually run Spamwasher and all is well.
