i've been a fairly heavy smoker for sometime now, smoking between 20 and 40 a day (only if i go out in the evening down the pub or something), and i have determined my bank balance and body can no longer tolerate this kind of abuse, so i've effectively given up.
i've gone from twenty to one or two a day, and now it tastes horrible and makes me feel dizzy, but that said, i still have the cravings from time to time.
the gum pisses me off because i do not habitually chew gum so i find it annoying, and i've yet to try the patches (due to their expense, and its the end of the month and i can't afford it) so does anybody here have a recommendations to help me stop?
if you've been a smoker, what are your experinces of giving up and how long did the process take?
Giving up smoking
I thought about giving up last week. I even picked up the box of patches in Tesco, but for some reason I put them back on the shelf and bought 20 lamberts instead.
I will give up one day, but not at the moment. I get too easily stressed at the moment, and a ciggy is my only relief. I'm not a heavy drinker compared to my friends, so basically all our bank balances remain at pretty much the same level.
I find alcohol far more damaging to the body than cigs. Cigs don't cause you to sleep with extremely ugly uni girls, nor do they cause you to lose your driving licence.
Plus if you go out drinking/clubbing more than twice a week, you already spend more than a 20-a-day smoker would on cigarettes.

With cigarettes, I always find it's just holding them that I like.. you kinda show off I suppose.
I have an addictive personality, so I know I'll never buy a pack of cigarettes because I'll just be hooked. . . I'll still have one from time time though, ie. When beer is in the other hand. . .

Okay that is just tradgic.Cheese Head wrote:With cigarettes, I always find it's just holding them that I like.. you kinda show off I suppose.
Anyhoo I myself smoked for a short period finding myself addicted during this time but I gave up very easily - Okay it was only a month or so but still I knew that smoking was bad for my health and had always stood very strongly against smoking and still do even having tried it.
The next few lines will probably spark an arguement.
I have many friends who smoke - party why I started. I warn them periodically of what is likely to happen to them and their lungs because of it.
Smoking is a disgusting and shameful habit. It's a disgrace. I find it disgraceful that Smokers get designated 'Smoking Rooms' in workplaces and are allowed frequent breaks to take a fag. I can work a full shift at work with my allowed 45minute break but periodically the smokers are taking 5mins to have a fag and a drink.
I know some are friends but if they choose to smoke then quite frankly I don't care what impact or health problems it causes them and I hope it causes them many. I will support them should anything happen but they will not get my sympathy because it's all self inflicted and the same goes for everyone else who smokes.
If you wanted to stop then your willpower alone should be enough. All these patches and gum are just some fad for smokers to boast they're trying to stop. Quite frankly I managed after smoking for a few months no problem. I went from about 20 to zero overnight.
Smoking is some stupid 'look cool' device that for me is now a turn off. Before it didn't matter - but now the hottest of hot guys could walk past, if he smokes... he can keep walking.
My old man has given up twice for about a year & then gon eback on them for stressful reasons. First time was when his nan (my Gran) died & the second time was at a job (i don't want to mention the company for obvious reasons) that he really hated. He has since left & although still on the fags not on as many as he used to be

I know it seems so stupid to say holding the cigarette is showing off, but there is something that makes me feel very "ooo, look at me". But I still wont do it because I know I'd rather be alive than "cool".
And if he's straight?!Smoking is some stupid 'look cool' device that for me is now a turn off. Before it didn't matter - but now the hottest of hot guys could walk past, if he smokes... he can keep walking.

I remember a while back you were very against smoking, so if you don't mind my asking, why did you start in the first place?Dr Sigmund Mohammad wrote:i've been a fairly heavy smoker for sometime now, smoking between 20 and 40 a day (only if i go out in the evening down the pub or something), and i have determined my bank balance and body can no longer tolerate this kind of abuse, so i've effectively given up.

well, about this time last year, we went out for a crimbo dinner down the pub local to where i work in deepest norfolk and for a laugh, i put on a rubber glove on one hand, and my colleage dared me to order the food and give the bar person the money with the hand wearing the glove, i also, thought it would be funny to purchase one of those big fat hamlet specals and smoke it with that hand.cdd wrote:I remember a while back you were very against smoking, so if you don't mind my asking, why did you start in the first place?Dr Sigmund Mohammad wrote:i've been a fairly heavy smoker for sometime now, smoking between 20 and 40 a day (only if i go out in the evening down the pub or something), and i have determined my bank balance and body can no longer tolerate this kind of abuse, so i've effectively given up.
anyway, i found the stench of cigars quite relaxing, so, every night before i went to bed, and before i went to work, i'd have a cigar. at this time, i'd just started seeing somebody, we'll call her 'p' and she smoked, but only fags (she hated the smell of cigars), so, instead, when i went round hers, i'd just have a fag or two, and from there, it kinda got into a habbit. sad i know, not really been able to give up due to some absolutely mad (but very fun) goings on in my life which have left my mind in complete turmoil (all women related, sadly!)
