I've never actually heard anyone say the word chav, I've only seen it debated on the internet.

When did this whole chav thing start, I remember a few years ago all kids and young people used to wear sportswear and it wasn't seen as wrong it was just what people did. Now it's automatically associated with the types that go on Trisha. It's a nightmare, when choosing a new pair of trainers or something I have to make sure its not a style that Chavs are seen in!

We don't have 'chavs' here as far as I am aware.

Edinburgh and the east have 'schemies' (as in someone who comes from a housing scheme - although I'm sure that was obvious); and Glasgow and the west have 'neds'.

I think 'Chavs' and 'Schemies' sound polite compared to over here, where they are normally called 'Nackers' and 'Scumbags'. (And a host of other things ;) )

While North of the (Irish) Border "chavs" are known as "spides".

Never? How odd. Which part are you in? Mind you, Edinburgh is such a petite city it's not as if we have localised dialects.

Ah. I'm the north side of the city - London Road - but I spend a lot of time in Leith for my sins (of which there are many).

Apparently 'Chav' is now the official word that can be applied to these people, it has been written in a book by Susie Dent (That woman off Countdown) though it isn't in the Dictionary it is official that it is the word.

It was on Granada Reports tonight and they asked people in Manchester words to describe chavs though there were no good ones, but it was made cringeworthy when the presenters and reporters put on their best Ali G impression.
