Every 4 years or so, I sit transfixed for two weeks by the Olympics.
I love watching all the different sports, from the archery to the beach volleyball (yay!) to the badminton. I get a chance to see all different sports I rarely see otherwise, and I am not a huge sports fan.
I love the spectacle and the grandeur of the occasion - the temporary coming-together of the world - the roar for the sole Palestinian competitor - getting to see beautiful foreign cities (except Atlanta, sorry MrT) - seeing British athletes win more than we should for our population size.
I am coming home between 3 and 3.30 every day to watch the Olympics, and before I go on a night out, I watch it slowly destroying a bottle of vodka.
Olympics - human festival or total bore?
Are you going to miss the Olympics?
I'd like to see other events such as human endurance and other world record breaking attempts.
I'm not a fan of the Olympics, purely because I have no interest in sport.
If we had a porn olympics, then it would be a different matter altogether. Although I have managed to catch some volleyball.........mmmm...theres some smashing arses there!

There is definitely a mystique around the Olympics - of course, I know I am buying into the hype, but I love them.

I'm certainly not a sports watcher, but like jb there is something compelling about the Olympics. I find myself engrossed in the most random events and nearly without fail stay tuned til the end.
Perhaps its the splendour and grandness of it, or the fact that the standard is so high. I love the Olympics.
EDIT: I wrote this before I saw your reply but we do seem to share the sentiment (and some of the vocabulary).
Yay Olymipiad.

Human festival. I think it's great that no matter what sort of a person you are, even if you don't have any real interest in sport, you can turn on and at least once find something that will interest you and keep you watching. I'm not a particular gymnastics fan but I love watch Olympic gymnastics, the same with swimmingjohnnyboy wrote:Olympics - human festival or total bore?

i'm afraid i see the olympics as a total bore, a total waste of resources, and a complete waste of time.
take for instance the bid to bring olympic games to the united kingdom, all that money that could be much better spent on public services.
can you imagine what would happen if the games did ever happen here?
us brits would show ourselves up in front of the world, like we do everytime with violence, criminal damage and so on.
i'm sorry, but to me, it's a total waste of time and money like all sport is.
somebody go give these fans a proper hobby like housework

Bah! Hum Bug!
The Olympics are fab.....especially men's gymnastics.....all that training and that fab body just to spend 2 minutes prancing about doing twists and forward roles! Madness!
Is it me or were the Romanian team seem to look like porn stars doing their day job??
That spandex is really telling.
But serious, it is a fab way for the world to get together and had a good time in harmless competition.
No-one cares enough about the country with the most medals, just that everyone is included!
How fab was it that Iraq walking to the stadium on the opening night and whole audiance cheered........and the fact that woman was competing for the first time in years!!
Marvellous!

As a former gymnast at a competitive level - youth level, obviously - I would say that it is a bit more than "prancing about doing twists and forward rolls," but with regards to the lyrca... the South Africans were always the biggest.mikejprz wrote:Bah! Hum Bug!

Actually is my one major regret that I gave up gymnastics. Competed at regional level, and probably would've gone to national level, but too late to get back into it now, sadly. But I do still have all of my BAGA awards, including the elusive BAGA 1. So nerr.
As for the Olympics - love it. I like becoming an expect on the most bizarre of sports in the space of 20 minutes, not having known that they existed just an hour earlier. See: curling, synchronised diving, etc.
