Isn't Morrisons a pile of crap

I know it is a bit stupid for this thread to be revived as it hasn't been in use for 2 and a half months, but anyway, whilst working today I picked us this magazine that is bullshitting about how great the Morrisons/Safeway takeover is, but I've scanned in a pic to show you what will happen to your Safeways....

If you can't read it, to sum it up it means the big stores will have the full range, the medium ones will have as much as possible, and Safeway Compact will remain, though if you can read the bottom it says that they would be happy to change it to a Morrisons if it was possible.

Plus the picture sums up the feeling...

And they've merged the company magazines, even the old Morrisons staff magazine looked better!

I saw the other week that the former chief exec of Safeway is bidding to buy back the the Safeway Compact stores.

My god. According to my local safeways it's lowered around 15000 prices... yet everyone is complaining prices have gone up. lol

As for the company magazine, that's awful. Does any company have a decent mag... or as decent as it can be. McDs have MDUK which is actually not that bad design and content wise... if you fancy reading about charity and green goings on.

I still don't get why Morrisons are disposing of the most valuable asset they have - the Safeway brand name. However much they don't like it, Morrisons is a relatively obscure northern brand, completely alien to most people who live in the south. Safeway on the other hand is everywhere and enjoys brand recognition that Morrisons could only dream of. If they are going to go with a single brand, it would actually make more sense to ditch the Morrisons brand and make it all Safeway, but I see no reason why the two brands can't continue to survive as they do now (in the same way that Dixons and Currys do etc).

Whatever they might do internally, retaining Safeway-branded stores (along with the Mega Store et al sub-brands which Safeway have established so well), especially in the south where Morrisons is all but unheard of, would have given them a much easier ride in their task of improving the performance of those stores.

And since Morrisons design is so retro, introducing it in an area where it is unknown would probably get it categorised in the same camp as Lidl's and Aldi, rather than with Tesco and Sainsburys.

Just as it would be commercial suicide to rename Asda to Walmart UK, I don't think Morrisons are going to do themselves any favours by ditching the Safeway brand.

Well here in the world of Milton Keynes, apparently our Safeway Megastore was the first to be changed completely into Morrisons. Note the word Megastore (!) It seems to benefit workers here in MK as there seems to be twice as many staff than before and dare I say probably too many.

The food isn't exactly great in terms of their own, I had to throw away their salad bar items as the best I could describe it was mush. Prices seems to be lower here on products I tend to buy but I'm never happy as I end up going to different supermarkets just to get the deals.

I see where you're coming from with what you are saying, obviously most Southerners won't have a clue of what Morrisons is and when they see the 'M' the first guess is that it looks downmarket, like Lidl or Aldi, but you cannot blame them. Most of the original Morrisons stores are very modern these days, they did use to look outdated, but they have realised that in some areas they are a serious competitor (AFAIK Morrisons is more popular than Tesco in Warrington), even by changing their font it looks better. Inside it is a very good store, but the brand isn't brilliant.

Northerners know what they're getting with Morrisons, but Southerner's won't have a clue and would probably associate it with more of a down market look. I think they're right in one way to bring in the Morrisons brand, I think it should be established that Safeway is part of Morrisons and so many thousand prices have been lowered, even sharing some of the same own products I don't see anything wrong with, but getting rid of Safeway altogether is a big mistake, yes they own them, but they're getting rid of a strong brand as you said, if anything it could be a financial failure.

I think they should just stick to something like 'Safeway, a part of WM Morrisons PLC' or whatever, but keeping Safeway would work.

I can also understand why they want to get Morrisons established across the UK, but they should have a change before they're doing what they're doing.

It also said in the magazine that 50 stores will be rebranded and changed in the coming months, it will be done at apprroximately 3 a week!

There's also a list of Morrisons and Safeway stores that will be sold off to Waitrose or Sainsburys and its quite alot!

Surely it would just get crushed?

Anyway, as for Morrison's-Safeway transition, I am delighted to tell you that Cheshire will boast the last ever Safeway supermarket in the country.

As Morrison's are trying to get planning permission to build on a new site, they are not bothering to convert the existing Safeway over to Morrison's. Given that it is going to take about 3-4 years until it is finally completed, all other Safeway supermarkets will have been converted by this time.

The only difference I find with Morrison's is that they do fewer ready meals. Not necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes it can be annoying. The Safeway own brand stuff has all gone, and a lot of it has not been replaced by Morrison's own brand products, simply because they don't make an equivalent.

Out of interest... didn't Sainsbury's buy up some existing Safeway stores because of competition problems? Does anyone know of a Sainsbury's store replacing a Safeway one, because I've not seen any.

Well... my town was meant to get a spanking new Safeway store. Former offices, shops and homes were cleared ready for demolition to make access roads. Then the Morrisons take-over happened and according to the local press a few weeks ago, Morrisons are rumoured to be wanting to sell their newly-acquired Northern Ireland stores... which is just blummin' marvellous.

So quite probably, we'll have the last Safeway stores in the land... ever... even though they're a Morrisons in the inside.

We've got a huge new Safeway store in Bangor, Co. Down... they put all the Safeway signs up AFTER the takeover by Morrisons which seemed odd to me. Anyway, the good news is that the Safeway branded pasta spirals are 71p, and the exact same pasta spirals with Morrisons written in the place of Safeway (and next to them on the shelf) are 47p.
