Fonts folder crashes explorer when opened

I've got a bit of a bizarre problem here...

Whenever I try and open the fonts folder in Windows, explorer.exe crashes.

I have tried removing the customisations in desktop.ini for it and it opens fine, except it just displays all the fonts by their filename which at times can be difficult to know which one is which. Restoring all the stuff in the desktop.ini file, shutting the window and then re opening it again causes explorer.exe to crash.

I suspect it is due to a corrupted font, as this happened last time and I managed to delete the font because it had been just recently installed. Now I've left it without the dodgy font for a few months and it has worked fine up until now. Out of the blue one day it started doing this and I've not been able to work out what's wrong with it. I have tried opening it under a different user account and it still shows the same problems.

Please help me - I'm on the verge of throwing this computer out of the nearest window!

Quick search of Usenet at Google Groups: Many people have reported this and many people have not received a reply to this query either.

One suggestion I found is this one (based on Win2000 but as WinXP is derived from this it shoudl be okay):
Usenet Poster wrote:If you haven't tried this already, go in to fonts via CMD prompt and check for read-only - "dir /ar" will do this.

Normally the read-only attribute is reset when you install fonts, so this
may not be your problem. Also try "dir /as" to see if any are set to
system. They shouldn't be. If any are, resetting may allow you to delete.
Other things to try:

TweakUI and its Repair Fonts option (or just do <b><a href="http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBA/tip0200/rh0267.htm" target="_blank">this</a></b> as its the same thing).

<b><a href="http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl=en ... msftngxa09" target="_blank">This usenet posting</a></b> might also help. (remember to search for *.ttf for truetype fonts and not *.ttc as the post implies).

Then try <b><a href="http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl=en ... 11.phx.gbl" target="_blank">this usenet posting</a></b> as well.

Is it XP you have?

Try getting the Tweak UI powertoy from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/ ... ertoys.asp then choose "repair font folder" from the repair panel.

No, Windows 2000 Professional with SP4. I've got the old TweakUI and tried the repair option on that but with no luck.

I'll try all of the suggestions and will come back later with the results...

Just to let you lot know, it was a 'corrupted' font that caused all the aggro!

Thanks.
