Carnival Season

Well, never one to miss an oppertunity to start a new thread...I thought I would.

It is that wonderful time of the year when town's host their annual carnival. Marvellous. I have already helped lead one carnival with the help of my employer and Mental James Martin's favourite radio station.

Fab, I'm sure you'll agree. Do you enjoy your local carnivals? Do you find them a good source of entertainment and an enjoyable experience where you can meet the teethless community of your local area?

Just to mention, you can see me at Nuneaton Carnival on Saturday 19th ;) it's an event that you won't want to miss - as again I will be with the forum's most known radio station next to Neon Radio.

Oh God NO.........It's that time of year AGAIN!!

I'm sorry but I cannot abide them, though yours maybe in interesting in Birmingham, but up here in Warrington, they are just plain pathetic and really old fashioned.

We have none of the modern carnivals, we have 'Walking Days' which are jokes, the unfunny thing is that there are like 5 of them in 2 weeks! The annoying thing is that the main Warrington one is on a Friday, meaning a reason for the whole town to get pissed. Though the main events aren't interesting, it is just a load of scouts and kids from churches walking for ages. Though I appreciate they maybe interesting some years ago, but it is so boring for 2004, it means nothing to me! It also means that I get out of Warrington for the day, as we usually take an Annual trip to Manchester on that day!

If anyone has been to a place called Lymm (In the W'ton area) they will know that they have even more old fashioned events than the rest of Warrington, they have things like the May Queen, but Lymm is a far more old style village, but still the same applies IMO.

I wouldn't mind if they meant something and if they were fun, for me they are really boring and a shit reason to attract loads of drunks.

Southend do their carnival in style along the seafront in the evening; the illuminations get switched on midway through and then an expensive fireworks display at the end of the pier. Very nice.

And of course Southend Carnival has a couple of traditions. The first being that the tractor posing as a train with the help of a wooden dress MUST catch fire during the procession. The second is that at least two trucks at any given time must be broken down and require towing away.

I do seriously think carnivals are wonderful things - perhaps not the best organised and not always the most glamorous affairs...but there certainly is something I like about them.

That, and the fact that I get paid £35 for walking round for an hour and handing out bags. Nice.

Yep. A St John's person. The volunteers who qualify as first aiders, turn up at public events, then bandage, stretcher and spine board any person who cuts themself or has a bit of a cold, shoves them on an ambulance, and blue lights them to an Accident and Emergency hospital to waste the time of the professionals.*




*Yes, they do a good job, they should be congratulated for their voluntary work. But I take issue with the St John's Jobsworths who unfortunately aren't that much of a minority. Sue me.
