The Tesco & other non-Morrisons supermarket thread
I was reading The Metro yesterday, and I have to praise the retro clubcard advert that featured vintage packaging for a few products. Got a kick out of me seeing that. Wish they actually were selling retro packaged items.
They are, some in my local include Pepsi, Robinson's, Tango, Wagon Wheels, Rocky.Blewatter wrote: Wed 02 Apr, 2025 14.52 I was reading The Metro yesterday, and I have to praise the retro clubcard advert that featured vintage packaging for a few products. Curiously though, my local Tesco flagged the retro Pepsi as restricted to 16 and over when I'm pretty sure the ingredients are identical to the normal one.

With M&S confessing to a cyber attack over Easter, I went into my nearest M&S Food to use the self checkouts.
Out of 8 self checkouts, only three were working and while it was fine to scan barcodes, scanning the Sparks card took at least 15 seconds to register and around 30 seconds to get chip and pin to process as contactless is still down.

M&S have now suspended online orders as they continue to recover from the cyber attack.

The M&S Cafe in my local shop has been closed all week. It’s one of those where you have to order on a screen, so I assume that system is beyond whatever backup systems they are using.
I saw on one of Sky News’ live thread things on their website a few days ago, someone complaining that they got to the till only to be told you can’t use contactless and that they should be putting signs out to say so.
A) I think the staff have bigger things to be dealing with at the moment then printing out signs that people will probably just ignore and B) it’s quite the edge case to have customers coming in with their mobile wallet as the only way to pay and not also have either a physical card with chip and PIN, or cash. Maybe don’t walk into a shop with only one method of paying and no back up?

Incidentally, although these days I’m quite happy/not embarassed to use Apple Pay, I actually still use my card for the majority of contactless payments, it’s less of a faff and also every card machine seems to have the contactless bit on a different side. Some of them are at the very back which means it’s awkward to get Face ID to work. Or in Nero the counter is very high up and the machine is laid flat so it’s awkward there too.

A) They'd have fewer things to deal with if they prevented people from getting to the till and being unable to pay, and it would take 10 minutes of one person's time to print signs and stick them on the doors. Some people might ignore them but a lot won't. B) Is it? I haven't routinely carried cash or a card for at least five years and it's been a problem a total of one time.Philip wrote: Sun 27 Apr, 2025 11.22

You could print stuff in ten foot high letters and people would still ignore it.

Contactless was working again on Friday.
A friend of mine works for M&S and said they'd been getting abuse from customers over Click & Collect or not being able to use Contactless.
The Digital receipt option on the M&S app doesn't show any receipts since the cyber attack happened.

But for a lot of people, their phone is their wallet. Their back-ups are the various cards they have stored on Apple Pay or Google Pay.Philip wrote: Sun 27 Apr, 2025 11.22B) it’s quite the edge case to have customers coming in with their mobile wallet as the only way to pay and not also have either a physical card with chip and PIN, or cash.
