Yes, it's an accessibility feature.

Incidentally the dots on the card are an accessibility feature as well, I believe it's one dot for debit cards and two for credit.

HSBC also mention that the large printed card number is an accessibility feature, so special cards for people who need larger print don't have to be requested and are accessible by default.

Have the banks agreed on an orientation for vertical cards yet - ie chip up or chip down?

I don't see an issue using vertical cards as most are now used that way for contactless or chip and pin transactions.

I'd think those with basic current accounts would be kept horizontal though as they don't have the contactless function?

NatWest had to reissue my basic debit card this week and surprisingly, those of us who have the Foundation current account now get contactless as standard.

It's still a Visa for now as the issuing of Mastercard debit cards starts in December.

I got a letter from Barclays today saying they're going to close my (formerly ING) ISA with 8p in it... trying to decide if i have the energy to demand they give me my 8p back.

It looks like most banks now offer contactless on their basic current accounts, but Metro Bank is the only one which doesn't offer Direct Debit alongside contactless.

It's a major improvement for the poorest in society who can now access what everyone else has been able to access for the last few years, including those retailers that are contactless only, or cheap fares on London's transport system without having to pre-pay using Oyster.

The TSB Bank page for their basic account links to a page about the debit card which says it's contactless. But it's not clear if that basic account does or not. The Co-Op account does allow Google/Samsung/Apple Pay as a back door way of using contactless.

Has anyone received the new Natwest bank cards yet? I would have thought they'd want them rolled out before Christmas
