this Newsbeat article namechecks the current voiceover as former EastEnders actress Helena Breck - though this recent Daily Star article actually casts a little doubt on that.

Also, is the 'this item can now be placed in your bag' a replacement for the 'unexpected item' bit of speech - if so how on earth do they mean the same thing? One of them tells you to put the item in your bag and the other tells you to take it out!
If you scan an item and don't put it in the bagging area (or it's too light for it to register) you'll get a "Please place the item in the bagging area" prompt. If you put an item in the bagging area either without scanning it, or if the item is heavier than it expects you'll get the "unexpected item" spiel.

That article mentions she "can be heard on NCR’s ‘talking checkout’ for Tesco, Safeway and Asda". Safeway, the supermarket that's not existed for 11 years?

Maybe they meant Sainsbury's?

I note with interest that PayQwiq (which I had previously never heard of) has appeared as a payment option on the self checkouts in a number of Tesco stores in Newcastle. The website says it is a London / Edinburgh trial, but perhaps gearing up for a wider rollout if it is appearing here?

So what brand will they end up trading under? CostCutter?

I actually think a takeover probably represents the best-case scenario for the Morrisons chain at the moment. They badly need the infrastructure that all their competitors invested in 20 years ago (Safeway included) and are now reaping the operational benefits of. The only way they can get that is by allowing a group with that infrastructure already in place to enlarge/copy/adapt (delete as appropriate) for the UK market. I could see one of the American chains (Safeway even) or perhaps Carrefour being interested.

I noticed that at my local Tesco too, next to the greyed out Contactless option. I might press it "by accident" next time I go to see what happens.

It'll ask you to scan your phone?

I didn't pluck up the courage this time, so I didn't see. I reckon it will just come up with an error message of some sort.

EDIT: This is presuming the tills require some special hardware for PayQwiq.
EDIT 2: It appears it needs to scan a QR code. My local Tesco doesn't have that capability.

Thanks for that link. I came across this in an Edinburgh store recently when trying to scan my QR code Clubcard. It failed and the assistant stepped in thinking I was trying to use PayQwiq. I had no idea what it was until now. I've looked into registering for PayQwiq but it doesn't seem to be possible at this time.

I have now discovered that I can change my Clubcard in the iOS app to a barcode instead which should work on older tills, though if PayQwiq uses a QR code I don't know why my Clubcard QR code didn't work.

This trial is perhaps why Tesco have not rolled out Contactless to all their stores, which I wish they would do as it would allow me to use Apple Pay. The store in question, however, does support contactless.
