This may be way off, but is there not possibly a more legal reason for staff being asked to remove the First branding other than basic aesthetics? The new company should not be allowing staff to wear another company's branding as the staff no longer represent the old brand.
It's more simple - and childish than that. Abellio don't want First getting credit for good work, and First don't want complaints for bad work.
