Another High Street Rebrand

I see the Post Office have launched a new brand for their financial services products. Is that the same font as the POST OFFICE text? I've only just this moment noticed that it's not Gill Sans, as it used to be.


It doesn't seem to appear on any of their products so far - in fact, the credit cards still have the same design as they did when the Post Office logo was really Gill Sans and had a green border, yellow text and a bevel.

The Mall at Cribbs Causeway (near Bristol) has a new website: http://www.mallcribbs.com, which does not use the "The Mall" logo that has been used for the past 17 years.

I have a couple of theories about this:

• It is a generic new website that will be adopted by other M&G Real Estate shopping centres.
• This is the first step of dropping "The Mall" identity to use "Cribbs Causeway" as a more identifiable name.

At the end of last year a multi million development plan was announced for The Mall here:

The same font is used on the Cribbs Future website, but it also uses "The Mall" logo.

The social media accounts are still using The Mall branding.

EVERYONE just calls it Cribbs Causeway, or Cribbs anyway. No-one has EVER used "The Mall" as a name. Also the Mall only refers to a part of the estate, whereas there are other bits which the public at large still call "Cribbs Causeway".

Maybe I am in a minority, but I have always called it The Mall. If I have gone anywhere else up there i.e The Retail Park (Currys PC World, Argos, Next Home etc), The Venue (the cinema, restaurants) or Morrisons, B&Q, Asda, then I call it Cribbs Causeway.

I'm with you that the names The Venue and The Retail Park never get refered to as such, but I always thought it was quite common to call the mall "The Mall".

I worked in The Mall when it opened so maybe that is why I use it's proper name, but a lot of people I know use the name The Mall to distinguish it from the rest of Cribbs Causeway.

It is about a 15 drive from where I live.

Maybe we have discovered the reason for them dropping The Mall name from the logo. Local people refer to it as The Mall, but people further away just refer to the general area, which is understandable. Maybe the owners are focusing on trying to get custom from a wider area than before.

According to Wikipedia Cribbs Causeway was originally just the name of a road in the area, and when the shopping centre and retail park was built it adopted the name. That makes sense because before it was built I don't recall calling it Cribbs Causeway. The Asda (previously Gateway, Carrefour) has been there ages and I think it was just referred to as being in Patchway pre 1998.

The Argos at the end of my road is one of those fancy iPad extravaganzas and the ordering works fine but they really haven't thought through the collection part. There's no longer a collection number or time on your receipt and you now sort of awkwardly walk forward up through the crowd, one of the staff members wave you over behind one of the free standing desks and check if yours has arrived yet even though you can see it hasn't. Once that's been established you shuffle over the side joining the rest of the scum looking at their phones and looking up every time a box is put on the shelf before taking half a step forward and then back again when you realise it's not yours.

Get set for (your) box.

Have Argos still not realised that their advertising campaign doesn't make any grammatical sense?

My local paper, the Hull Daily Mail, is getting a new look on Thursday (strange move to do it midweek, I'd have scheduled the change for the Monday if I were in charge). As a bunch of local newsagents have Mail branded signage, they'll need to be changed as well.

They refitted all of stores here out of the blue around September/October in exactly the same way and they have exactly the same problems. They do look very nice, but it seems very odd that they got rid of the waiting areas and collection numbers - I wonder if they thought they were now efficient enough to get the product(s) in a short amount of time while the customer paid - though I can't imagine how they thought that would be possible, at least on a consistent basis.

Another issue I've noticed is that some of the older generation are confused by, or reluctant to use, the iPads. They seem a odd choice as well - while they're standard kit that's easy to replace, they're also a bit small and fiddly for some.

They also still use those self-service card only machines that use some sort of rubbish HTML application that uses the Argos branding on-screen from about 10 years ago.
