I think we should be proud of our right to burn effigies of politicians. If Salmond had burned an effigy of Cameron he'd have probably gained support from a lot of people.

If a Saltire was being burnt, then maybe one could take offense (though it still wouldn't be illegal, thank goodness). But it wasn't, and burning Salmond is hardly offensive to anyone other than Salmond himself.

I don't think burning effigies is ever helpful and was stunned to see the list of all the previous people they have burned effigies of (David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Osama Bin Laden). Give me an evening with fireworks over this hate-inspiring tripe any day!

It's a bit of humorous tradition. Controversial, annoying, or plain evil people have always made it onto the bonfire. How many times must Anne Robinson have been burnt?

People have been burning effigies on bonfire night since at least 1625 when they set fire to the Pope and the Devil. I think it's pretty safe to say it's traditional to burn effigies as part of the celebrations.
