Unlike the Wicked Witch of OZ, her minions did not all disintegrate when she passed away, so we still have the current government, and her passing is just symbolic and does nothing in practical terms.

Its sad for her friends and family, but it was her odious policies, and evil convictions that many hated, not the flesh and blood that espoused them.

It's one of the moments in life where the debate on social networks is more richly contributed to, faster paced and more dynamic than a message board. I think debates may come here in time, but the last few days have been all about Facebook.

I find the gloating and celebration a bit sick really -many comments coming from those who probably were not even born or at least were toddlers when she was in power is pathetic bandwagon jumping. I cant understand how posh middle class yuppy university students have any beef with thatcher - they are ultimately products of everything she stood for.

I disagree with her ideology and in the fullness of time many of the conservative polices of the day such as flogging the utilities and council houses have undoubtedly proven to have been flawed and caused untold damage to communities but,I did feel as a politician she had authority, she was somebody who I always felt knew her own mind - and at least she had passion - just look at the bunch of useless wet tossers we've got in our cabinet today. People who've been around longer than me seem to share the view this government is the most useless they can remember.

It does indeed seems a long time ago since the excitement of the Blair government 1997.

I'm so bored of this idea that being a formidable politician mitigates anything. For a start, it just perpetuates the idea that being a good politician is some sort of admirable quality, and that doing terrible things with conviction should be worthy of 'respect'. Eww. No.

Like I said, I can't agree with where thatcher was coming from ideologically any more that you do. I remember how hard it was in the 1980s for my parents, how both my mum and dad worked all hours for our house and me and my sister. But I just can't find it in me to be joyous that a frail 87 year old lady, a mother and a grandmother is now dead.

The blunt, pathetic reality today is that a little old lady has died, who in the winter of her life had to water roses alone under police supervision. If you behave like there's no such thing as society, in the end there isn't.

Ooh, I saw that in the Guardian on Tuesday, and was very surprised to see Russell Brand had written it - it's a very interesting article.

I sort of agree with Dr Lobster, and that all the gloating and celebration is in poor taste and a bit wrong. You've nothing to gain by the fact she's now dead - she hasn't been in power for over 20 years, so if you didn't like her, the celebrations should of been in 1990. As Russell Brand said in his article, on Monday 'a little old lady [has] died' - the powerful women that made all these cuts and changes that many disliked disappeared a long time ago.

Also, I noticed that yesterday 'Ding dong the witch is dead' from the soundtrack of 'The Wizard of Oz' was at the top of the iTunes chart - that saddens me.
