Help me with an obscure film reference

I was talking with my sister about a film we enjoyed watching as kids, but our memories of it are vague - it must have been from the 1980s - anyway:

I remember it was a fantasy film with crazy characters, and the climax was a battle or fight in some mountain. A wizard (maybe) was killed or pushed to the floor and a load of spikes from the floor went through his head. Then I remember this mountain or fortress break up.

That's pretty much all I can remember. anybody know what this film might be?

thank you for that gavin, that isn't the film, i do recall it. i did do a trawl of all the 1970s and 1980s fantasy films and refreshed my memory of some films i'd seen that i'd completely forgotton about, like the dark crystal.

i think, what i remember is actually a mash up of two memories because i can't find any single film which fits the bill.

i think i'm remembering scenes from a neverending story and krull, two films i probably saw close together as a child in the 1980s.
