They didn't snap, no. there must have been a gear arrangement whereby the centre of the tape winder kept moving, but the toothed part that held the tape sprockets didn't move. But mine would "click click click" until it you stopped it.

And I remember the Christmas I got a sony walkman with a rewind function.

I felt like some big shot, let me tell you.

I got through a few cheapo Alba sub-walkmans in the mid 90s and none of them had a rewind mode, god knows I wish they did! Last one I had came with FM and a Bass Boost, which miraculously really worked.
