I mean, *really*?

If suppose if you consider that Cameron has no mandate to represent Scotland then this little manoeuvre is neither here nor there... but come on - Parliamentary time being spent on this shit?

What a lot of pish.

Quite.

If you love your football then fine. But it doesn't "bring the nation together" or engender "national pride", or any of this other bullshit that fanatics attempt to imbue it with. Its a sport game, nothing more.

Its analogous to women wanting everyone to cheer for a candidate in America's Next Top Model or something. Lots of people may enjoy something, but you wouldn't necessarily expect everyone to get on board.

Why is football considered something special?

Because its the domain of men - *some* of whom are utterly incapable of applying that much emotional release to any other aspect of their lives. They perhaps wouldn't cry at their own wedding; but make them watch 22 men kicking a ball and they're whooping and cheering and crying and feeling angst.

Enjoy it, have a wonderful summer of sport - but keep it out of politics and stop applying it with some mystical qualities when none such exists.

*Some* of the men cheering together for England are as apt to knock seven bells out of each other when their local teams play in opposition.

I bet there would not fly the Scottish flag for Andy at Wimbledon.

I'm supporting New Zealand in the world cup. Country full of sheep, 3-4 million people, love rugby - it's a natural choice for a Welshman.

I ask this to all people questioning why I'm not supporting England: would Englishmen support France? A good deal of England is closer to France than it is to Wales.

Except are England part of the UK, Alexia?

Must we discuss this? It's quite insufferable.

Anyhow if it was that important we'd have a UK team. But we don't. So there.

I take it everyone's seen the joke about government scientists wanting men who have a penis shorter than two inches to fly a white flag with a red cross on it on their cars to identify themselves.

Indeed. Which leads me off at a tangent, for a change.

Team GB.

Why isn't it Team UK?

Before you ask, yes "Team GB" does cover Northern Ireland too. Just doesn't recognise it in it's name.
