I'm meant to be flying to Egypt tomorrow. Can't see that happening this week! Researching into what rights I have. I'm sure it's (understandably) weighted more to help those stranded abroad, than those who have not left the country yet.

Our CEO and one of the directors of the business are stranded in Dubai, with the earliest flights being offered on 28th April.

She has asked me to look into flights for other family members (who are also there), and try and push for compensation - but as this is a force majeure I'll have to let her know that there's very little I can do.

Apart from anything else - if the airlines had to pay compo on this, it would bankrupt most of them - which she must be aware of.

Better get on the phone then, eh?

So it would appear, and I hope this isn't a large secret, that there's not actually a numerical limit for how much ash there is from a volcano before you ground your planes, just that you can't fly if there's ash from a volcano hanging around. This is, of course, based on the fact that a couple of times planes didn't do too well out of this situation.

Now, given that it's been at least 17 years since this happened you'd think someone might have thought to check what the tolerance of engines to this stuff is. Still, watch out for a blue and white plane tomorrow
