Don't know if Southern Brits can buy either of these two comics. Does anyone know ? Gavin Scott must have read both.

Anyway Oor Wullie wins hands down for me.

I had to vote for The Broons but I'm just as fond of Wullie. Its almost odd to think that *not* everyone got one book or the other at Christmas (they rotated year about you see). My mum still gets them, although they are now compendiums of Dudley D Watkins work from the 1940's onwards, rather than those crude immitations in the 1980's.

I loved how the whole Broons family would invariably mis-hear or misunderstand something Granpaw was doing each week:

----------------

"He's dain whit?! Sweepin' the streets at his age? The daft auld gowk."

Whole family puts on coats and march round to have a confrontation. They discover he is *actually* on the ice curling team (hence the broom) and is embarrassed by the showdown in front of his new teammates. Much gnashing of teeth ensues.

"Me got it all wrong", says 'Bairn' (the 3 year old girl with no given name from whom the family get their information)

Everyone laughs.

--------------------

Its hilarious I tell you. HILARIOUS.

Fair play to all the characters in either the Broons or Oor Wullie, for refusing to change hairstyle. I particularly like Oor Wullie's dad's barnet and 'tache.

Love the expressions too:

ye wee nyaff!
ye fly wee monkey!
ye daft skite!

Oor Wullie is a wee scamp. The Broons is the more enjoyable read.

We certainly got Broons/Oor Wullie annuals in Northern Ireland. Used to think they were great. And they were indeed the best bit of the offensively inoffensive Scottish newspaper that is The Sunday Post. Do they still print them each week?

Och aye, certainly they still appear each week in the Sunday Post but I dinna read them......I prefer to wait for the annuals to come oot.
