I tried that, and got nothing. Could you please advise? I'm using a Maris Piper if that helps...

I'm afraid this no longer works with a Maris Piper although I'm told there is some success with attempting the above method while humming the theme tune to Family Fortunes.

It does however work flawlessly with a King Edward. Those in Scotland may wish to have an additional root vegetable nearby.
