Ofcom is today advertising a licence to run a second national digital radio ‘multiplex’, which will expand the number of digital radio stations and provide more choice for listeners.

The new multiplex, the airwaves needed to broadcast digital radio stations, will allow around 10 new national Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio services to broadcast to UK listeners.

The first national radio multiplex (operated by Digital One) is now at full capacity as the number of DAB stations available nationally has risen from four to 14 since 2009, leading to the need for a second multiplex.

Over a third (36.6%) of all radio listening is now on a digital radio and over 90% of UK adults tune into the radio each week.

The closing date for receiving applications is 3.00pm on Thursday 30 October 2014.

All applications for this licence will be published on the Ofcom website for public comment as soon as possible after the closing date.

The full details of the procedures for applying for this licence are published on the Ofcom website.
Not only that, but the Broadcast Technical Code has been updated to include DAB+, so we may be seeing DAB+ broadcasts before very long: http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/binari ... tement.pdf
