Vinyl

As those of you who are my Facebook friends may be aware, I have recently acquired a record player - it's part of a Pioneer midi hifi system bequeathed to me and my missus by her late grandfather. So naturally I had to shop around for something to play on it. I won't bore you like I have my Facebook Friends with the complete collection list so far (it's just today passed 40-odd singles plus about 15 albums since I started collecting last month) but I've got a few "gems" amongst them -- TV geeks will appreciate the commercial release of Quiz Wizard, aka Blockbusters, with a huge grinning Bob Holness on the sleeve; as well as Simon May's theme/suite for Holiday, and the Christmas version of the Milky Way Red Car & Blue Car song. As my preferred decade is the 80s, I've picked up a lot from that decade, such as Starship, Paul Simon, Huey Lewis, Richard Marx, Europe etc... plus Star Trekkin by the Firm, and the song that was #1 on the day I was born; Only You by the Flying Pickets.

Having searched for "Vinyl" on Metropol I notice a few fellow members are also appreciators of 7" and 12" ... does anyone else have a collection or, like me, are they beginning one or have begun one in the effort to keep this wonderful sounding medium alive?

I've got a box of extremely eclectic LPs and another with singles. My pal left his turntable with me a couple of years ago, but its still in the bag it came in (oops).

If I can be arsed digging through that cupboard I filled with "miscellaneous" when I moved in last March, I'll compile a list.

I buy vinyl all the time, got shelves heaving with all the weight of them! Have you got a decent record shop near you - postage on ebay is more than the record most of the time.

I use the amazing http://www.45cat.com to keep track of what singles I have, but it's not a complete list http://www.45cat.com/member/marillionfan

Today I shopped at Kellys Records (kellysrecords.com) - apparently the biggest record shop in Wales. A little pricey, but you get to browse a huge huge amount. I also live around the corner from Diverse Music (http://www.diversevinyl.com) and a second-hand bookshop in Newport Market sells singles at 25p each. And, as luck would have it, there's a Record Fair in Newport tomorrow!

If I buy music (which I very, very rarely do, and then generally only when they're RIAA safe) I buy Vinyl.

Not because I appreciate the analogue medium (I must be tone deaf, can't tell the difference except the pops), but because I like the big artwork.

I've got a few (crates of) singles and albums kicking around.

Very rarely hook the gram up to anything at home nowadays.

'Er indoors thinks the speakers are too big. They're only Quad Electrostatics, about the size of two large radiators. Don't know what she's complaining about!
