has shrove tuesday ever been this late within the last 20 years?
everybody i know thought they'd missed it this year, i've never known it to be in march in my memory but looking at wikipedia it seems to happen quite often.
being an atheist and all that i'm not into observing these things.

Must admit, I thought it would have been earlier, middle to the end of February. Something to do with Lent, which is tomorrow, which I presume is tied in with when Easter falls.
However, I made my own pancakes, following the example of Adam Boulton, except I didn't flip mine, as they'd have landed on the floor. Very nice, all the same.

In 2000, Easter was on April 23, this year it's April 24. The next latest will be 2019, when it will be April 21. This year is also one of the rare years where both Western and Eastern Christianity celebrate it on the same day.

Shrove Tuesday / Ash Wednesday is 40 days before Easter. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. See : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computus for more Church-based date madness.

Anyone else finding it ironic that the day traditionally reserved for clearing the old crap out of your cupboards has been usurped by one where you buy pancake supplies specially?

Personally it's Ash Wednesday I look forward to. Just to see if Kay Burley makes any further religious faux pas'.
