Has anybody here got any experience with wake-on-LAN?

I'm looking for a free program to load on one machine on a network (the machine that's always left on and I can already remotely access from home) that will send the magic packet round the network to wake up a particular other machine (one that's normally turned off at night but I just want to switch on occasionally).

I've already succeeded in sorting out the BIOS setting on the machine I want to turn on, but fell at the hurdle of expecting Windows Remote Desktop to have a "turn it on" option.

I'm probably feeding Mr G Oogle with all the wrong keywords, but can't seem to find a free program to send the magic packet for me.

I only need to send the packet to turn the machine on, I can then use Remote Desktop once it's powered up.

I messed with this a while ago, and I THINK it was this program to generate the wake-up call: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-To ... face.shtml that I used.

You also need the MAC address of the target computer and your router needs to support it

Router won't be a problem as I'll only send it across the subnet, so it'll only go via the local data switch.

Do you need to fill in the remote port number, if so do you know what to put in there, or can you leave it blank?

Okay, forget that; it seems to insist you tell it one, but it seems happy with 7.

Local testing completed successfully, I can turn 'er indoors' machine on; I'll let you know how I get on in anger tomorrow on the remote network.
