Facebook: Privacy and Idiots

So, Facebook started out as a very closed site, which I rather liked. Unlike Bebo and Myspace where it was expected your page was public Facebook was meant to be private and keep your details between you, your friends, and a few bits at bobs in the direction of networks (e.g. uni).

Since those days they've opened up more and more stuff to the public and yet I've tried to keep on top of it and keep my profile low key, I've been in the privacy panel tweaking things and even when the big page came up a few months back which meant I could suddenly stalk everyone from school I thought I had everything on my page locked down.

So I was rather surprised the other day to note that "your friends can share the following details to apps" and all the boxes were ticked. Exactly what is it with Facebook's cavaliere attitude to privacy? How exactly do they expect to make money from useless info on the site, why not just cover it with adverts like any normal person would?

On a related note, I'm getting more and more pissed off with friends joining stupid tedious anti-Tory groups such as "I'm a really good Prime Minister... lol jk, I'm David Cameron" (this wouldn't be as bad did I not suspect those joining the groups didn't actually bother to go and vote) and Daily Mail made up stories such as "Now they've banned England shirts from pubs."

Is there a correct ettitquette for defriending people due to their own stupidity? Do you have to give them notice first?

I was amazed to discover that all your privacy settings automatically revert to the default settings every time you change networks.

The Sun, I think you'll find. And there is a decent, expanding antidote to that.

Facebook's just irritating now. I am sick of people 'liking' pages that someone whose predicted GCSE grades spell 'FUDGE' have made. I am sick of the ones that are like this:
XXX and 26 other friends like I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ on I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥.

To be fair, Facebook did patch that one within about a day of people realising they could flood the feed like that.

i quite like that they've opened facebook up a bit more... it means you can nose through peoples profiles that you wouldn't necessarily want to be friends with!

on a side note, one thing that gets me is people who add you as a friend, remove you after a few weeks and then add you again... ad infinitum... one person has done this to me 3 times now. no idea why. merely an acquaintance i went to college with about 10 years ago. strange. oh and those that vanish for a few months and come back again.

In the version of Facebook immediately prior to this one you had the option of setting Status Updates only to be visible in your feed, so you didn't get all the tedious "likes", "has joined the group" and "throw a sheep at" posts. Now you have to click a couple of links to get the same result, which is annoying.

They should stop allowing people to make pages and ban people that make pages with names/links like that.
