I have read the last time this volcano went off it lasted 18 months and the ash cloud is thought to have caused the food shortages that led to the French Revolution!

The source is the QI forums. (they are way smarter than me)

Not as cute though.

Hmm - so will this be "let them eat cake" all over again?

Yay!

I am glad you think so *BLUSH*

Its interesting considering they think the air will be good enough to let aircraft fly this evening.

I blame my sister. She works abroad, and flew back to the UK in mid January, just as all the airports shut because of snow.

She's currently on a bus on her way to Gatwick to fly out...

It stopped me from flying out of Belfast today, but thankfully I've got my flight transferred at no charge, waiting until Sunday to give time for any bedlam or backlog in people to clear.

I wish Newswipe was in production at the moment. There's been some bizarre news moments today.

As well as a small number of "no-one tells us anything" grumblers at airports, I've also seen BBC News show a viewer email outlining how the author intends to contest his insurer's view that a volcanic eruption is an Act of God. There has also been use of National Geographic's Air Crash Investigation to show what panic on an aeroplane might be like.

If you think this volcano causes problem wait until it's neighbour, Katla, erupts.

The Eyjafjallajökull volcano has erupted three times in recorded history (before it's current period of activity). Each time it did, it was a precursor to the Katla volcano erupting, which is a much bigger deal.
