So, I'm considering getting a blu-ray player to go with my new telly. Question is, do you think lu-ray is a flash in the pan tech that'll be replaced by USB Sticks / SD Cards / Digital Downloads in the near future?
Is it worth spending £50 more than an upscaling HDMI DVD player with USB port for the blu ray or not?

Absolutely.
Bluray allows you to view HD as it was meant to be rather than how it comes across on broadcast channels. Mrs Scrooge was massively unimpressed with HD until I got my bluray player and we watched watchmen.
If the BBC need any evidence that reducing the bandwidth of BBCHD was detrimental, that should be proof enough!
Until broadband speeds reach a reasonable level, there is always going to be some comprimise on downloading films. HD should never be about comprimise. Spend around £100 on a bluray, make sure it has a usb/sd slot and all your bases are covered!

I would, I have an upscaling DVD Player (Which is my surround sound system, the reason I have it), and Blu-Ray now, and Blu-Ray is fantastic. Upscaling the DVD is nothing compared to Blu-Ray, and I personally would recommend a Samsung. If you have other Samsung products they'll work together seamlessly, like my Surround Sound and Blu-Ray do, and you don't need 7 remotes, because one remote will work them all, of course presuming they're Samsung.

It stretches the pixels and blurs them I think.Alexia wrote:Can someone please explain how upscaling works? If a DVD's resolution is 720×576, then what happens in the upscaling process to 1080p/i? Does each pixel simply get enlarged or is there something more complicated going on?

It's more to do with pixel approximation. Using the pixels around it and some intelligent knowledge of images they copy some pixels and take a guess at others. It does clean the image up a fair bit.
Having said that, TV's have upscalers inside them anyhow, it's just the dvd players have a slightly fancier one that's dedicated to the idea.

Interesting to note that Sony are adding an integral Blu Ray player to some of their new Bravia's (the ones with FreeviewHD onboard), pricing isn't definate yet but seems to only add £50 looking at some initial pricelists to the cost.

[pedant] integrated, rather than integral. [/pedant] The Blu-Ray player isn't essential to the TV as the TV will work without it, therefore it is not integral to the TV's functionality. Apologies.DVB Cornwall wrote:Interesting to note that Sony are adding an integral Blu Ray player to some of their new Bravia's (the ones with FreeviewHD onboard), pricing isn't definate yet but seems to only add £50 looking at some initial pricelists to the cost.
and I forgot to mention I plumped for the blu-ray in the end, at tesco for £99. Having said that I did buy the dvd first but then changed my mind and had to call Amazon's call centre with their wierd staff with unplaceable accents.
I have so far bought two blu-rays, the first being the recent Star Trek movie, which was very good (especially in terms of its menu navigation, loved the little popups and stuff) but given the film's stylistic use of lens flare it was often hard to see the quality.
Hairspray however (bought to compare with my DVD) looks and sounds INCREDIBLE. Having only experienced the joys of BBC/C4/MTV HD on virgin I was completely blown away by the quality my TV was actually capable of. Very pleased I went for blu-ray in the end. Thank you all.
