I have today surprised myself with the purchase of this, which arrives on Tuesday:

Clearly we have a bit of an iPhone-using audience and I thought maybe it was time to pick the slack for what it looks like will outnumber iPhones before too long (although not necessarily what is better ). Any suggestions as to what I should download when it arrives?

Barcode Scanner: err... scans barcodes
beebPlayer: BBC iPlayer app
ASTRO: good file manager, lets you download files not recognised by the phone
facebook: self-explanatory
Gmote: nice little app, lets you play files on your computer remotely, or on the phone
Goggles: Google visual search
Google Sky map: Augmented reality thingymabob, v. impressive
Movies: Good for cinema times
Ringdroid: For editing mp3s into ringtones
Shazam: Names the song you're listening to
ShopSavvy: Product search using barcodes, finds cheapest price online and locally
Twidroid: twitter client
UK National Rail Train Departures: Train times
Wifi Analyzer: Finds best channels, shows signal strength etc

That's just a few, all available for free. There's probably loads more that I just haven't thought of.
Android 2.1 coming in the near future too, so the future of Android's looking good.

I convinced my dad to get this as he wanted an iphone but didn't want to switch to o2 or orange.

I couldn't get the Android market to work on it: it kept coming up with (the same) error when trying to associate it with a google account, something about no data coverage please try later.

The forums suggest it's a fairly common issue that a hard reset usually resolves. But I haven't bothered to try this as it's not my phone.

Why do you need an application for this? It's all available on their website. there was an article on Boing Boing moaning that they were charging for an iPhone app for what should be public domain material... even though it's all on the website for free

Well it's a free app that I use, and I just find it more convenient to be honest. It lets you set your favourite stations and just seems better optimized for a mobile platform.

If it's free fair enough... but the iphone lot apparently have to pay for it!

For the iPhone search the App Store for CrossCountry Train Times. It uses the National Rail Train Departures system anyway - and is free. The National Rail app is costly, but it is good.
