Understandable for a man of 71, and after a little thought, Chris Evans is indeed the obvious replacement. But with this change, Ken Bruce's position starts looking a bit shaky, don't you think? (Not that I would mind if Zoe Ball took over from Ken Bruce full-time, I must admit.)

Evans shouldn't have got the show. Richard Allinson would have been my choice.

I would have preferred Johnnie permanently, but he doesn't want five day weeks all the time any more. Pity.

I find Allinson so bland an uninteresting. I think Evans would appeal to a wider audience.

Alex Lester would have been an interesting choice. I never understand why he is on basically in the middle of the night; unless that's when he wants to work.

Sad that Sir Terry is going, but on the upside, this is the natural time to tell Sarah Kennedy she's crap.

Allinson is great for the traditional R2 audience as is Kennedy, although I admit this does leave her out on a limb which is unfortunate. R2 needs to be so careful so as not to destroy it's core audience whilst grabbing trendies.

I think it's worth remembering that Radio 2's remit is to appeal to listeners of 35 years old and over. I would hazard a guess that the average listener age of Wogan's show is significantly above this - we're seeing the same situation as Chris Moyles, whereby the listener age is above what it should be and hence the young'uns get brought in to replace them (well, not yet with Moyles, but it won't be long off).

For what it's worth, I think that Chris Evans has really proven himself since he took over the drivetime show, and I hope he does well with the breakfast show.

Richard Allinson is all very well as a reliable, un-offensive, versatile fill-in... but far too bland for a flagship show.

Isn't that more to do with the fact that the RAJARs don't take into account those below 15, significantly raising the average age?

Just been involved in a lengthy discussion over a wine or six, with people who know about these things. The conclusion was that this is excellent news for BBC local radio. The Wogan listeners who can't stand Evans are most likely to migrate in the direction of their local BBC station. We know that whatever station Mr Average tunes to at breakfast is most likely to be the station he stays on all day, so there are lots of local BBC people rubbing their hands with glee and looking forward to the first set of RAJARs of 2010.

I tried to give Evans a go tonight and gave up. There's a disaster coming in exactly the same way as Vine when he replaced Young. Evans intends to bring audience phone participation to the Breakfast Show. That's one feature I hate about Vine's effort.

I suppose Today will become my Breakfast listening again as it was in the Wogan interregnum period. I'll cherish the next 13 odd weeks.
