Trolleys

At my local ASDA, near the side exits, there's a sign saying "ALL TROLLEYS WILL STOP AUTOMATICALLY IF TAKEN ACROSS THE RED LINE". And of course, near both points of exit there are red lines painted on the floor.

Here's the spooky thing- when I take the trolley across the red line, it actually does stop! A little yellow clamp coats one of the wheels and it stops. I even tried lifting it over the red line and it still happened.

My question is, how the hell do they do that?!

But...but... I held my keys over the red line to see if it was magnets and nothing happened!

it's the same system as is used on the shops with the travelators. stops them dead. I must try it myself, I've never actually tried.

Could you reverse the trolly back btw or did you have to abandon it on the line?

Plus I fail to see how it would stop determined stealers, all you have to do to defeat it is pick the thing up and carry it over the line.

No, I couldn't reverse the trolley. The clamp stayed on. And I lifted it a few feet off the ground and walked over the line and it still clamped. Plus, it's gonna be a lot more difficult to lift a trolley filled with shopping. (That's assuming it isn't being stolen by some weirdo who just wants a trolley)

We've got a similar system at my local Sainsbury's, but trolleys from the store still emerge in perculiar areas of town.

They ahd the same thing at the Sainsbury's and Tesco in Sale. What you got, especuially around Tesco is a who load of abandonded trollies litterinmg the steet. It's a pedestrianised street and the "line" is just a few feet from a back steet where people like to pick shoppers up. I think they have a worker specially assigned to go round unlocking all the wheels (they have a special little "key").

Why don't yo just lift it over the railing instead of the red line then?

They've had this at the Gainsborough Tesco for a while. Strangely the trolleys still end up in the bushes around the area.

My Tesco has had that for years. It's not so well sign posted though and is marked out by brickwork and not any painted lines (which would be better). There's almost always at least a dozen of them strewn along the way to the bus stop.

The funny thing is, it always seems to be the old biddies that drag them the furthest. They seem to know the wheels will lock up but don't seem to care much even though its probably harder to drag the trolley load of shopping than carry the bags.

That's why you get flats on some trollies - you know the sound of the wheels making a regular clack - it's from the wheels being ground down when they've been dragged over the perimeter wire.
