Mac OS X Update Fault

I've just updated my Macbook Pro only for it to pop up saying not all of the updates could be installed. It restarted and now I'm stuck with a load of error messages (I don't know the name, looks a bit like DOS) featuring words such as "panic", "kernal trap" and "fault" during startup followed by a "You need to restart" dialog box.
I ran the OS X CD and repaired the hard drive two or three times and claims it is fine. However, now the errors come up alot faster. My main instinct is to just format the disc, but I have no way of backing my things up. I would go to the Apple Store but I've been there for the past two days; I don't like the thought of having to go there again.
Could anybody help? Thanks in advance.
