i was listening to east of england dance music station kiss.fm (under duress) and they were playing a record which had the vocals of one track and the instrumentation of another, i've not been able to find it anywhere, so i am assuming it's one of their own - the station does remix some recent tunes into 'dance' versions.

so what i want to know is how are the vocals extracted? is it done with software (which is how i would do it) or is the radio station supplied with clean audio tracks they can chop and remix?

For many tracks record companies provide instrumental and acapella versions. http://www.youtube.com/instrumentalsandmore gives you an idea of the kind of stuff available on promo discs.

on a related note, i've got several mp4 files on my computer that I've downloaded from youtubbe that are essentially music with a still imagr throughout. what would be the easiest way to strip the video from them leaving only the audio - preserably still in aac format rather than transcoding into mp3?
