External Hard Drive AND External CD Writer Issues?

I've got to shoot off to work in a sec, so sorry if this is brief, I will add more detail to it later if needed.
I need to burn a load of music CDs. Basically I have an internal CD writer which more often than not, seems to either reject CDs or produce poor results, including tracks that will skip. More often than not, I am burning from the external hard drive. I thought that might be the issue, but there's no problem when I use that method on my older, slower PC.
A friend has an external CD writer. If I was to use an External Hard Drive to burn using an external CD writer, do you forsee any issues?
Thanks in advance, as they say.

Your CD writer sounds like it has optical alignment issues which usually means go buy yourself a new one for £20. As long as there's a fast enough connection from the externals to the PC and some form of buffer protection then you'll be fine though pay the £20.

My DVD-RW drive is generally rubbish at burning cds but seems pretty reliable if you change the burn speed to the lowest possible. Might be worth trying.

When, oh when, will this technology feck off and be replaced by something easier to use and more resilient?
I can't burn discs. Can't do it. Not a one.
I recently realised that my DVD RW had just given up the ghost even in terms of playing discs - but even on a brand new machine with Nero software I've never been able to burn a disc.
I mean, I'm not stupid or anything.
They're just shit.
Judith Hann lied to me.

But I spread jam on mine all the time and they're fine.

thanks all, I've ordered myself a cheapish CD Writer, so fingers crossed it will solve the problem.

you are not the only one who has noticed this, i think i have gone though about 5 cd writers at work i don't even use it that much... they seem to just die after a while. good thing you can pick them up for a few quid these days.
my first cdrw drive was a sony 4x drive and i remember it costing £169.99 .... mid-late 1990s i think.
