Not sure if this is possible, maybe Google offer this, but would there be a way of having a world map where members can pin-point their location?

Yes. Personally I've found the purpose of the 'Location' field in our profiles completely baffling.

Hyma did mention metropol uses google analytics, and that does a summary of site visits on a map.

Sorry if it's obvious - 28 hours in work across two days has fried my brain.

On the left click Edit, then you can add points to it. Then click Done.

Even logged into google, i cannot see anywhere on the left saying Edit...
