Playing music off a card drive to a car AUX jack(no laptop)?

Hi - question for you all:

I rather enjoy listening to music while driving, and I have a USB-powered HDD which I keep my audio on.

All very well, but short of setting up a laptop and plugging it in, I have no real way of playing my music. So, I was wondering if a contraption existed that would, for not very much money, let me mount my hard drive and navigate the tracks in a basic way (even shuffle), and output to headphones from where I could just plug it into the AUX port.

This actually seems like quite a reasonable request, but after lots of googling, I can't find any such device. It must be possible since many cars and hi-fis have this functionality built in. Just to clarify, I don't want an MP3 player, I want to play the tracks straight off the drive. I'm happy to consider nonstandard ideas!

Thanks...

Something like that? Obviously you'd have to remember how to navigate the menus but it's a start :)

edit: oh wait are you saying you've got an external hdd already?

YES! that's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for, except yes, for one of those USB drives. It's not an enclosure, it's one of those consumer things that already has the USB bit built in.

But that's a great start!

I have attempted a (laughably bad) diagram of what I want, the bit cirled in Red.

It might be that such a thing doesn't cost much less than "proper" solutions like old linux'd iPods, so watch out for those on ebay.
