Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Combis

We got my Dad a HD-DVD player last year, only to realize a few months afterwards the format lost. I was considering getting him a Blu-Ray player for his birthday or Christmas, but didn't want his HD-DVDs going to waste, nor having player upon player upon player on the TV stand.
I know Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combos have been made, but i've had a quick browse on Argos and Currys and such, then Googled it, and I can't find any combo players. Do they still get made, or have they been discontinued?

Think you're referring to the LG BH-100, which I believe is the only combo unit that went on sale in the UK.
It's still about, but it isn't cheap:

PS I make no statement on the quality of the above reseller

Thanks for that, jjames. I'll have to agree with you, it is pretty expensive. I do recall seeing a couple of others in an Argos catalogue one time...

Don't think they ever actually made it over here though. There were a number of models in the US, but I know that Samsung pulled the plug on theirs rather promptly and I believe the only ones that might have been sold here will have been grey imports from the Continent.
Shame really -- lots of bargain HD-DVDs about, and for all intents and purposes there's no difference in quality between the two formats.

Might I suggest buying a plain Blu-Ray player and keeping the HDDVD one for a few years when writeable blue rays and ripping software for converting is available?

Would such a thing become available, Hyma? I would've thought it'd be too tricky as they were both different formats altogether.
