Following the takeover of GCap Media to Global Radio, it is widely expected that Global will rebrand it's One Network stations as 'Heart' at least people are getting excited over the idea on DS, Global Radio is run by the man who killed off the ITV regions Charles Allen (I seem to remember he used a series of Hearts to do that). Stations that are safe include Wyvern FM, Mercia, Beacon Radio and BRMB which areas are already covered by a the original Heart station, and are set to be sold off to satisfy OFT.

Global Radio is expected to sell stations in the East and West Midlands, to avoid its purchase of GCap being referred to the Competition Commission.

While the Office of Fair Trading has cleared Global to operate all stations in London that would be owned following the sale, the overlap of GCap's services in the Midlands would mean a lack of choice for advertisers and audiences.

Global Radio has submitted plans to dispose of several stations from either the Global or GCap portfolios; the exact details of which stations are to be sold are being kept confidential until a public consultation is undertaken.

Simon Pritchard, the Office of Fair Trading's senior director of mergers said: 'Merger efficiencies benefit customers and put pressure on rivals. In this case, they tipped the balance in favour of clearance in London. This shows that with the right facts, efficiencies can make a difference, even at first phase, and even in a horizontal merger with high market shares.

"The divestment remedies [proposed by Global Radio] in the Midlands, where efficiencies were not sufficient, are about restoring competition to make sure customers will not be harmed."

In the West Midlands, Global's Heart and Galaxy stations compete closely with BRMB, Wyvern, Beacon and Mercia, while in the East Midlands Heart competes with Leicester Sound, Trent and RAM.
Well, it's happened to local bus companies and local ITV franchises, we can't expect this industry to be any different, most One Network and Heart network stations are already taking the maximum amount of networking they are allowed to.

One Network stations that could be effected include Essex FM, Invicta FM and Plymouth Sound and around 30 or so others.

The full list can be found here http://www.musiccontrolradio.co.uk/ (Just exclude Beacon Shropshire and Wyvern FM from that list).

As I say it is just speculation at this point, but these stations have had their playlists modified to include more songs that you'd here and Heart and their slogan changed to match Heart's More Music Variety, the name of their morning feature has also been rebranded in line with Heart's Time Tunnel.

As a small aside, have you been talking to Barcy recently? Got quite a few sound-alike spelling errors there.

It seems the rebrand to Heart has been confirmed
Radio Today wrote:Global Radio's plan to create dozens of Heart branded radio stations across the country is no longer the worst kept secret in the industry.

The latest OFT report over the purchase of GCap Media contains confirmation of Global's plans for mass re-branding. Every station will become part of a refocused brand, either Heart, Galaxy or a network of locally-focused large city stations.

Large scale network programming will become the norm, which, Global say, will benefit listeners and advertisers. Global's strategy is to develop near-national coverage for Heart, and greater coverage for Galaxy. Already Xfm Scotland has been confirmed as the next Galaxy station, with others likely to follow soon.

It has not been made clear at this stage which "large city" stations will retain their name, (whilst refocusing towards the relevant Heart/Galaxy demographic), and which will be totally re-branded. Either way, Global will create national network programming with "quality presenters, and at the same time, retain the local character"

In the East Midlands, Global proposes to sell Heart 106 - and has the green light to sell to a company/individual who will continue to operate the station under a franchise agreement, with national sales still handled by Global. Even the choosing of presenters would be dictated by Global's programming team.

In the West Midlands, the Office of Fair Trading would like to see the four stations up for sale (Beacon, BRMB, Wyvern and Mercia) to be sold as a package to allow the new owner to compete on the same regional basis against Global.

Global will also be required to divest certain parts of its digital services in Nottingham (Gold Nottingham and one of Galaxy, Xfm or Chill) and Swindon/West Wiltshire.

In London, the OFT is happy for the merged company to own Capital, Gold, Xfm, Choice, LBC, (AM and FM) and Heart because of substantial competition from Bauer and GMG Radio.

Similarly in Manchester as Xfm and Galaxy will come together under the new company. Also, no competition concerns arose with GCap Media acting as a national sales house for GMG Radio.
It's interesting that some 'large city' stations will not be rebranded to Heart. Maybe they realise that some of the old heritage brands are just too strong and successful to be binned off. I would guess the likes of Trent, Red Dragon and GWR may escape the rebrand.

Either way it's a sad day for British radio with so many established and loved station brands no doubt going to be consigned to the history books in favour of a bland, middle-of-the-road identikit corporate identity.

Well done Charles Allen eh? First ITV now Radio....

I can't see the Xfm stations hanging round much longer, with the exception of London, they've pratically all bombed in the ratings, hence forth why Xfm Scotland is becoming Galaxy. Apparently for Xfm Manchester the terms on the licence are a bit tougher so they probably won't find it as easy to change the fomart, but I think Heart Manchester could happen someday, Guardian and Bauer dominate the Mancunian airwives.

Heart Manchester won't happen any day soon, not while Century Radio is around, the same as Heart Cardiff won't happen whilst Real Radio is around.

XFM Manchester won't be allowed to flip format any time soon and when it does it will need to be youth focused and since as that city already has Galaxy 102.2, if Global decide they no longer won't to XFM in that city I can see it being sold to Bauer and being turned into Kerrang!, as it though XFM Manchester should be pretty cheap to run with Global any having to provide a local breakfast and drive show and should be profitable.

As much as I despise their output, from a regional point of view I think it's important for Red Dragon and GWR to retain their name insomuch as the imagery (symbol of Welshness on one hand, and of the Westcountry's railway heritage on the other) is still quite strong.

And the failure of Star Bristol shows that as far as output goes, the Heart-esque output is well served by Real (receivable as far east as Swindon.)

Global have once again confirmed this with only a handful of local brands staying, GWR, Essex FM and Ocean are among those that will go.
